Adeela Suleman: Not Everyone’s Heaven by Rosa Maria Falvo

Description
The first major monograph on this acclaimed Pakistani visual artist, based in Karachi.Â
Adeela Suleman studied sculpture at the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture in Karachi, Pakistan. By deliberately juxtaposing pastoralized scenes rendered in the filigree tradition of Islamic art with the harder, formidable qualities of stainless-steel, Suleman’s work points to the beauty, pathos, and precarity of the human condition that is built into contemporary societies. Recurring motifs such as birds and flowers are replete with symbolic meaning, and abstracted notions of loss, disappearance and death quietly resonate through her sculptures, referencing both the chaos wrought by humankind more generally, and catastrophic occurrences in the artist’s own sociopolitical milieu.
