Painterly Constellations by Helen Frankenthaler

Description
Kunsthalle Krems and Museum Folkwang present a selection of the extraordinary work of Helen Frankenthaler, the great 20th century abstract expressionist who lived and worked in the epicenter of the New York School and created her groundbreaking abstract soak-stain pictures in the early 1950s, alongside people like Jackson Pollock. Frankenthaler is considered a pioneering link between Action Painting (1940s-50s) and Color Field painting (1950s-60s).
The focus of this publication is Frankenthaler’s ability to create painterly experiences, journeys and atmospheres — on paper as well as canvas. Over 70 works on paper, from the late 1940s to the early 2000s, are juxtaposed with an exclusive selection of paintings from the individual phases of Frankenthaler’s artistic oeuvre. Frankenthaler’s work is barely represented in European museums and collections and has seldom been shown extensively in German-speaking countries. The majority of the works depicted in the catalogue come from the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation in New York, supplemented by private collections and institutions.
