Description
Sam St Jon is an award-winning photographer from Wollongong, NSW, who uses photography to create lucsious, affective and often funny pictures that reference religious and renaissance paintings.
This incredible photograph is a contemporary restaging of Caravaggio’s painting ‘The Entombment of Christ’, in which Christ’s devastated followers carry his body to its final resting place. Sam’s image replaces Christ with a drunk; his friends and family are gathered around him and are lamenting his pitiful condition. In the bottom part of the image, St Jon replaces Caravaggio’s depiction of the plant Verbascum Thapsus — which was thought to have medicinal properties and was said to ward off evil spirits — with empty cans of VB.
This image is full of dark humour, and also evokes the original in its use of chiaroscuro, colour and pose.
The image measures 50 x 70 cm, is printed on museum-quality paper and is professionally framed in a stunning decorative gold frame. The size and fragility of these pieces means that the buyer will need to collect them from our Gymea shopfront. Please contact us for more information.
