Artist, poet & curator
Moira Kirkwood has lived in the Illawarra since 1996 and is a proud graduate of West Wollongong TAFE and UNSW. She’s been painting since 2000, is a respected poet, and has curated numerous exhibitions in Wollongong and Sydney. Moira’s works are typically boldly coloured, busy compositions, often reminiscent of urban or industrial scenes. Absurdity and whimsy seep into the works as well; they are seriously playful, and are often about structures that are collapsing, abandoned or unreliable in some way. Moira’s work treasures the frailty and dignity of marks made by human hands. For Moira, the aim is not to paint a particular thing or scene – she lets the work lead instead. When creating an image, she is “listening for instruction” rather than responding to a place or an object she sees.
